Dr. Yannos Papantoniou

Dr. Yannos Papantoniou studied Economics at the Universities of Athens and Wisconsin (USA), History at the Sorbonne (France), and obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge (UK). Thereafter, he lectured at the Department of Economics of the University of Athens, simultaneously serving as a researcher at the Greek Centre for Planning and Economic Research.
From 1978 to 1981 he was a staff member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris. During the same period, he became advisor to the President of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), Andreas Papandreou, on the governmental program of PASOK.
In 1981, he was elected member of the European Parliament. In 1984, he became Advisor to the Prime Minister on European Economic Community Affairs.
Since June 1989, he has been elected member of the National Parliament for Athens. He has served as Deputy Minister of National Economy, Minister of Commerce, Minister of National Economy and Finance, and Minister of National Defense. As Minister of National Economy and Finance (1994-2001), he shaped and implemented policies that led to the accession of Greece in the European Economic and Monetary Union.
