En Chordais is an internationally acclaimed Greek musical ensemble that specializes in Byzantine and Middle Eastern music; the group was awarded the Prix France Musique des Musiques du Monde in 2008. This concert will explore the wealth of the Byzantine musical heritage and its dialectic synthesis with the Ottoman, Persian, and Arabic musical traditions. Among the highlights of the concert are the pieces “T’ Aidonia tis Anatolis” (Nightingales from the East), a piece found in manuscripts kept in the libraries of Iveron and Xeropotamou Monasteries of Mount Athos; “Ya Ummallah” (O Mother of God), a Maronite hymn in Syro- Aramaic, a language very similar to the one spoken by Jesus Christ; and the world premiere of “Tasnif Persikon” of ’Abd Al-Qadir Al-Maraghi, from a Byzantine musical manuscript of the 16th century. The concert will close with contemporary compositions that will illustrate the creative continuity of Byzantine music and its influential power in meeting with modern trends.
